Design & Technology Curriculum Summary

Subject Intent

In Design & Technology, students combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the environmental impact of future technological developments. In Design & Technology we aim to expand students’ independent thinking skills, to challenge preconceived ideas, inspiring them to develop their own opinions so they are able to justify these and broaden their own cultural capital. Our intention is to encourage them to think creatively, solving problems as individuals and members of a team.

Excellence Statement

An excellent student in Design & Technology will develop a thorough understanding of an increasingly technological world. They will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the wide range of topics covered in the Design & Technology specification through completing both practical and written outcomes to an exceptional standard. They will exude a passion for Design & Technology as well as applying a problem solving approach to a varied range of challenges. An excellent student will embrace the iterative design process and be a creative problem solver who is willing to take risks whilst demonstrating flair and originality. They will demonstrate a great awareness of wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. They will be able to recognise the importance of Design & Technology in society and will be able to transfer their skills, knowledge and understanding to everyday situations to develop their understanding of the wider world.
