The Music Curriculum at SVHS meets the requirements as set out in the National Curriculum for Music.
Subject Intent
The Spen Valley High School Music department will endeavour to enable students to work creatively when performing, arranging or composing. They will develop their ability to work sympathetically to the requirements of the music. When involved in collaborative work, they will be encouraged to work well with others, and some will lead the development of original ideas.
The students will be given guidance on how to be in control of the technical demands of their chosen instruments and understand what they need to do to improve both creatively and technically. The student will be given the opportunity to improve and develop their work. They will be encouraged to work alongside other musicians and not to be afraid to make mistakes. Regular opportunities will be provided for all students to perform.
Excellence Statement
Students are able to work creatively when addressing a performance, arrangement or composition. They can work sympathetically to the requirements of the music. When involved in collaborative work, they work well with others and are able to lead elements of the original ideas created within the work. Improvisation forms a key part of their creativity and they can use this in varying contexts and genre. The students will be in control of the technical demands of their chosen instruments and understand what they need to do to improve both creatively and technically. The student will actively seek out opportunities for improvement and they are creatively flexible and encouraging when working alongside other musicians. Excellence in music involves making mistakes, accepting those mistakes and learning from them to improve.
