Travel and Tourism Curriculum Summary
Travel and Tourism - Subject Intent
At Spen Valley High School, we believe that Travel and Tourism offers students a unique opportunity to explore one of the world's largest and most dynamic industries while developing the knowledge, confidence and transferable skills needed for life beyond school. Students investigate how travel and tourism organisations operate, how destinations attract visitors and how customer needs influence decision making. Through realistic vocational scenarios, students develop the ability to think like travel professionals by researching destinations, planning holidays and making justified recommendations.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge over time. Students begin by developing an understanding of travel organisations, visitor attractions and destinations before exploring customer needs, market research and travel planning. They then build upon this knowledge by investigating the global influences affecting tourism, including sustainability, destination management and the impacts of tourism on people, places and the environment. Regular retrieval, application activities and vocational assignments allow students to revisit and strengthen their understanding throughout the course.
Travel and Tourism develops a wide range of transferable skills including communication, research, problem solving, decision making and professional presentation. Students become more culturally aware by studying destinations across the world and develop an understanding of responsible and sustainable tourism. At Spen Valley High School, our aim is for every student to leave the course as a confident, independent learner with the knowledge and skills to succeed in further education, future employment and the wider world.
Excellence in Travel and Tourism

Excellent students think like travel professionals. They are able to identify customer needs, research destinations, evaluate information and make well-justified recommendations using evidence. They understand that successful travel planning requires careful decision-making, attention to detail and consideration of different customer requirements.
They confidently apply their knowledge to realistic vocational scenarios, communicate effectively and produce work of a consistently high standard. They reflect on feedback, take pride in their presentation and understand the importance of meeting deadlines, working independently and showing initiative.
Above all, excellent Travel and Tourism students appreciate the wider impact of tourism on people, communities and the environment. They recognise the importance of sustainable tourism, respect cultural diversity and develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed in further education, future employment and the wider world.
